This is an excellent example of a Fine Afghan Sultanabad runner. This piece has a gorgeous palette of colours, soft terracotta, and a wonderful contrasting blue. We recently commissioned these fabulous pieces. Clare oversaw the design and worked on the colour palette, ensuring she achieved the desired look. There are a few locations in and around Lahore where this is possible. Some displaced Afghan weavers had remained there from the conflicts two decades ago. The wool used is spun in Ghazni, , and Afghan from ; it is unique, tough wool very different from anything you find native to Pakistan.
The design is loosely based on the Ziegler carpets, which came from a collaboration between the Anglo-Swiss entrepreneur Ziegler and . As you can imagine, they feature beautiful repeating floral and fauna patterns intricately linked by a gentle, soft blue trellis-like pattern. The centre ground is terracotta framed by an outer soft blue and inset cream. The rug has been washed with herbs for a quiet and gentle look.
